Jim Nantz has been living out a boyhood dream at CBS Sports for over two decades now. In 2007, the sportscaster's career came to a pinnacle with a 63-day stretch of calling Super Bowl XLI, the Final Four, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga. Golf was his first love—as a member of the University of Houston's men's team, he befriended and roomed with future greats Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister. Nantz's father, who played college football and had long supported his son's goal of one day announcing the Masters, would have come along on the journey had he not been long shut out of the world by the ravages of a stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Nantz spoke with U.S. News about his dad and his new book, Always by My Side, a reminiscence of his "hero and inspiration," set to the backdrop of the two-month trip he wished they could've shared. Edited excerpts:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories might protect against Alzheimer's
Those who take ibuprofen on a regular basis for five years may be less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as they get older, according to a new study. And people who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines in general may have a decreased risk. But the findings are not concrete enough to warrant advising patients to take a daily dose of ibuprofen, or any other type of NSAID, to ward off Alzheimer's, noted the researchers, led by Steven Vlad, a fellow in rheumatology at Boston University School of Medicine. Long-term use of NSAIDs carries a risk of gastrointestinal problems.

I remember visiting a sick uncle when I was younger. Gradually, he became more and more confused—less aware of who his visitors were. He had dementia, as did my great-grandmother, who my mom says would get so disoriented that she'd even try to jump out the window of the family home.
Knowing my family history, I've been interested in studies that have come out in recent weeks, suggesting that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, like naproxen, ibuprofen, and Celebrex, may reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life. But because the findings—including one just out today—conflict with those of other recent studies, I decided to sort out the details.
